There’s a saying in the IT industry, that “you are only as good as your last backup”! This is especially true in business but it affects us all.

Too often I get calls from people in a state of panic, praying that I can recover their cherished photos and important documents after a hard disk failure. Well sometimes I can, but mostly it’s not possible and the lesson learned is a tough one.

Your hard drive is the most likely part of your computer to fail but it’s not the only way you could lose your data. Ransomware attacks are common these days which encrypt all your files and the criminals demand a huge payment to unlock them.

But it’s easy to avoid this catastrophe! You can synchronise your documents to a secure cloud based service or to an external hard drive. There are some pros and cons to both solutions but either way if your data is in more than one place you are protected against losing it all.

The good news is that backup solutions are inexpensive and automatic, in some cases FREE! (this depends on the amount of data you have)
